How to determine gutter slope the best way to calculate the slope of a gutter run before hanging it is to use a long string and a string level.

If it is improperly pitched you will need to adjust the gutter slope. Then fasten one end of the string at the highest point of the gutter and the other at the spot where the downspout will be. A gutter over 30 feet needs two downspouts. Measure the length of the gutter that you plan to adjust.

Ask someone to hold the gutter while you loosen and remove the gutter brackets or hangers. Get on a ladder after a rainstorm and look in the gutter. Always set a ladder on solid stable and level ground. Gutters need to be pitched toward the downspouts for the water to flow properly.

As a general rule gutter slope is set at 1 4 inch per 10 feet of guttering. Start on the end of the gutter farthest from the downspout and measure the space from the roof edge to the top of the gutter. Pull the gutter down about 3 quarters of an inch lower than it originally was. First determine the location of each one of your downspouts.

How to fix gutter slope. This means the downspout end of the gutter should be set 3 4 of an inch lower than the other end. If you re uncomfortable on a ladder or if there are power lines near your gutters call a professional for help. If there s standing water it s not pitched properly.

Inspect the gutter and check if it is incorrectly sloped. To correct this yourself you ll need to measure from the peak to the downspout. It should pitch from the middle toward the downspouts at each end. The gutter should have a quarter inch of slope per 10 feet.

Put a temporary screw at the back to adjust the pitch.
