Reinforcing An Old Shed Roof Trusses

The first step to reinforcing the roof is to add an x to the frame.

Simply take 2 diagonal pieces and place them between the trusses. Connect the trusses to walls. Apply construction adhesive along the edge of the truss to strengthen the connection to the plywood roof deck. Take 2 6x4 as long as your longest stored lumber and cut 2 inch deep grooves in them as wide as your 2x6 is thick every foot or so.

Each side of the iron should be four inches wide with the entire piece being at least two feet long. When i bought my house the garage roof had a sag. It can be nailed temporarily to each truss as the next truss is put in place. To hold them up until the decking of the roof is placed on top a 12 foot 1 inch by 4 inch piece of lumber is used.

When all the trusses are installed and the first row of decking is on this brace is removed. Use a level to ensure each truss is in the correct position. With your help rotate the shed trusses 180 degrees so that they are in the upright position pointed part facing skyward.

You need to use the level to make sure that each truss is perpendicular with the ground or 90 degrees. If you don t have an a frame roof you can run parallel boards between the studs to further offer support and to strengthen the frame. Reinforce frame boards that remain as part of the shed by cutting two studs per board one a foot long and the other 8 to 10 inches and nailing one on either side of the frame pieces. Usually trusses are put 24 inches apart.

Drill holes in angle iron to keep the rafter from buckling again you will need to secure it with a piece of 1 2 inch angle iron.
