Installing gutter elbows in your downspout will help redirect water flow away from the foundation of your home your driveway and other areas where excess water or ice in winter could be a hazard. For the garage i used a downspout adapter without a leaf guard since there aren t trees close enough for that gutter to get clogged up. To do this i cut the black corrugated pipe added a t and aimed the pipe upwards to the downspout. Downspouts can be extended beneath raised patios porches or decks to redirect rainwater to flowerbeds and other areas were water is needed.

These methods of rerouting can be combined together with capture and storage practices see below. Clean gutters regularly to keep rainwater flowing freely. This makes it difficult for the gutter to redirect the rainwater. Since my in ground pipe ran right past the garage i had the garage downspout dump in as well.

This can be done using swales french drains catch basins or downspout and sump pump extensions. If using a splash block at end of downspout be sure the splash block and ground upon which it rests slope. Water is then redirected to flow into a rain barrel or to a lawn or garden where it can soak into the ground. When your gutters and downspouts malfunction you ll notice that they ll overflow since they re clogged by debris such as leaves rocks and twigs. Intercepting and redirecting runoff provides an opportunity to safely discharge the volume to a place beyond the problem area. If the downspout is too short the water could splatter onto your home which could damage the foundation.

Do not direct diverted rainwater towards sidewalks driveways or other solid surfaces in order to avoid icing hazards during winter weather. Attach elbow to bottom end of downspout and connect a downspout extension to carry rainwater away from the foundation.
